Campground Host Lives the Good Life

Cynthia Brown is so fond of Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, she camps there half the year – from May through through October, as a campground host.

“This park is absolutely beautiful,” said the retired American Red Cross phlebotomist, as she sat under a large blue tarp hung over her popup camper.

This is the second year Brown, of Whitman, has spent the season at Wompatuck, greeting campers and helping them find their way around.

She couldn’t be happier.

RVer talks about the damage to her RV and the owner tells what happened when a tornado hit his Massachusetts campground last month.

In the following video the same campground owner describes the situation where a camper was killed when her motorhome was turned upside down during the tornado.

I think it is important to note here that the tornado was in Massachusetts, a state not know for tornadoes. This spring, northern California reported three damaging tornados. Again, California is not known for tornados. It’s important that RVers experience severe weather anywhere be aware of the potential dangers.

I never get tired of watching things being built. Watching RVs being built, either a video or taking a factory tour, is especially interesting to me because it gives me insight into how they are constructed and how I can effect necessary repairs.

Below is a video showing how PleasureWay RV builds the Ford Excel model Class B motorhome.

The Ford Excel requires the most extensive work to convert because it necessitates a width increase of about 8 inches (20 cm). Once the body work is done, the next step is to seal the metal with primer and paint. After that, it is time to start fitting internal components

Fifth Wheel RV Versus Low Railroad Overpass

Low clearance overpasses can be a real concern for RVers as the video below illustrates. Despite the warning signs and flashing “Overheight” lights at this Durham, NC, 11-foot-8 clearance railroad trestle, the driver tows his fifth wheel under and cleanly scrapes the air conditioner off the roof. Not sure if he even knew what happened.

So many high-clearance vehicles crash into the trestle the railroad installed a steel crash beam in front of it. Believe it or not – they have already replaced the beam once!

RVers must know the height of their motorhomes and trailers and add an additional six inches for safety. RVers most always be aware of all overhead obstructions and when in doubt about height avoid going under them.

Australian Goes Off Roading With a Travel Trailer

An Australian uses a Toyota 4×4 to tow a small travel trailer through the outback. He gets stuck a couple of times but it’s amazing what kind of terrain he managed to make it through with that trailer behind. It’s hard to say which was tougher the Toyota or the trailer. Then again, we didn’t get to see the inside of the trailer at the end of the trip.

Motorhome Burns at Flying J Fuel Pump

Lebec, California – Monday, April 26, 2010 —A motorhome went up in flames at the Flying J truck stop in Lebec, CA today.

CHP received a call at 4:52 p.m. about a motorhome on fire at the fuel pump at Flying J. The RV was fully involved in flames at one point before Los Angeles County and Kern County firefighters knocked down the blaze by 5:05 p.m.

CHP officers were asked to instruct Flying J personnel to shut off the fuel pumps if CHP units arrived before fire crews.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
